Overview
ArkeaBio is a pioneer in developing technology to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the agricultural sector. Backed by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, ArkeaBio is using innovative vaccine technologies to create solutions to reduce the on-farm methane emissions responsible for 6% of global GHG emissions. ArkeaBio technology will be integrated into proven delivery systems and farming practices to safely reduce global methane emissions from multiple ruminant species across a variety of geographies and agronomic systems.
Job Summary
The Bioinformatics Scientist I-II is responsible for the development and implementation of bioinformatics pipelines used for the analysis of next generation sequencing data, including metagenomic and 16S data, generated from Arkea’s vaccine development programs. They will play a key role in scaling Arkea’s bioinformatics and data science capabilities as the company grows. The Bioinformatics Scientist I-II will collaborate with all experimental teams at Arkea, through all stages of research & development.
Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of Computational Biology, the Bioinformatics Scientist I-II role requires a passionate, learning-focused individual who can work collaboratively within a team to contribute to overall R&D strategy as well as develop and deliver on research plans in support of Arkea’s vaccine development pipeline. A successful Bioinformatics Scientist I-II will perform the following:
- Develop and deploy bioinformatics pipelines for the assembly and annotation of rumen metagenomes
- Analyze methanogen abundance in the rumen using suitable methods, including 16S sequencing, qPCR, or dPCR
- Analyze gene expression of rumen microbiomes and ruminal methanogens
- Ensure bioinformatics reproducibility through version control and documentation in accordance with the company’s best practice guidelines
- Communicate results with stakeholders, including experimental/wet-lab scientists and management, through clear data visualization and narrative skills
- Contribute to the publication of patents and journal articles as a member of the Research team
Minimum Qualifications / Skills
- Advanced degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biology, Computer Science, or other relevant field
- A strong background in programming, preferably in R or Python, including package development
- Experience in next-generation sequencing data analysis, including metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, transcriptomics, whole genome sequencing, and amplicon sequencing
- Proficiency in software development best practices, including git/version control, code review, and documentation
- Curiosity with a passion for learning
- Exhibit flexibility and willingness to work closely with members of the scientific team
Preferred Qualifications / Skills
- Experience with AWS or other cloud computing platform
- Experience with containerization software (Docker)
- Experience with bioinformatics workflow managers (Nextflow)
- Familiarity with ELNs such as Benchling or Dotmatics
