Boston Metal is commercializing cutting edge extractive metallurgy technology that will revolutionize primary metals production, while decreasing cost and lowering environmental impact. This fast-paced startup company is seeking a highly motivated Metallurgical Engineering Co-Op to join our growing team.

As a Metallurgical Engineering Co-Op, you will be responsible for performing materials sample preparation, characterization, and analysis for the Anode Development Team. This role will offer exposure to alloy development, process engineering, and manufacturing of inert anodes to be used in aggressive Metal Oxide Electrolysis (MOE) cell environments. This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with experienced metallurgical and chemical engineers, gain hands-on experience, and make an impact to real-world projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform sample preparation for metallurgical samples, including cutting, mounting, grinding, and polishing.
  • Characterize feedstock and bulk powder metallurgy samples using a variety of techniques including optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), microhardness, and others.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data to draw meaningful conclusions and contribute to project objectives.
  • Maintain accurate records of experimental procedures, results, and observations.

Required Experience:

  • Currently pursuing degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or related field.
  • Strong academic background in metallurgy, materials characterization, and laboratory techniques.
  • Experience with sample preparation methods for metallurgical analysis is preferred.
  • Familiarity with analytical instruments such as optical microscopes, SEM, and microhardness is a plus.

  • Willingness to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Strong time managements skills and ability to work in a dynamic environment with shifting priorities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working with data in Python, MATLAB, JMP, and/or Excel.

Additional Information:

You will be working in a small team environment where teamwork and good relationships with other team members is critical. We operate pilot plants and labs and many of our staff members are required to wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and you should be prepared to do so as well when necessary.
