The VP of Engineering (Plant) will be responsible for leading the engineering efforts related to new location/plant implementation. This role includes, but is not limited to the following:

Position Overview:

  • Responsible for delivering engineering packages to EPC firms and VP of capital projects and working with EPC firms through the engineering phases. This includes developing a scope of work, doing cost estimation, and guiding the internal engineering team to get the data needed for the engineering package.
  • Lead engineering project planning and execution, including conceptual engineering; front end engineering design; detailed design.
  • Partner with capital projects on procurement, construction, and commissioning; ramp-up and hand-off to operations.
  • Liaise with the R&D team to implement and prioritize bringing process modifications into engineered plant designs or retrofits.
  • Work with the geology team and siting team to ensure plants are up and running on time and within budget.
  • Own relationships with external engineering firms throughout pre-FEED, basic, and detailed engineering.
  • Develop scaling strategy while balancing the complex relationships between engineering, fundraising, and capital efficiency.
  • Responsible for P&L, scope, schedule, budget, safety, and team management of engineering projects.
  • Ability to look around corners and liase with the executive and finance team when timelines and budgets need to change or are at risk.
  • Manage projects to achieve economic and product emissions intensity targets defined by technoeconomic and life cycle analyses.
  • Own process hazard analysis (PHA) and safety methodologies across all stages of project execution ensuring we are compliant with all local regulations.
  • Implement DBM and engineering packages for commercial plants.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with senior executives and Board members.
  • Manage and inspire employees with different disciples and areas of expertise.

What you bring:

  • A track record of leadership, initiative, and responsibility with a bias toward action.
  • Significant process and project development experience in the metals and mining, smelting, industrial chemical or petroleum refining markets, gasification technology, or other related fields.
  • 15+ years of engineering experience including project management with 10+ years leading cross functional engineering teams on complex projects including components of engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC); plant design; construction management; plant commissioning; and plant operations.
  • Demonstrated strong working knowledge of chemical engineering fundamentals.
  • A track record of using established PHA methodologies, such as HAZOP, HAZID, and FMEA over the course of design, construction, commissioning, operation, retro-fitting, and maintenance activities.
  • Process (Technology) development leadership experience, driving R&D projects through development and commercial launch in high growth environments.
  • Experience scaling new technologies with multiple unit operations (demo plants, pilot line, etc.) and bringing multiple new technologies to the market.
  • Proven track record of leading teams to successfully develop and implement complex engineering projects with budgets over $100 million, including P&L responsibility.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strategic and holistic thinker with the ability to make data-driven decisions and solve problems creatively.
  • Ability to travel to sites at least 1 week per month, or as needed.
  • Familiar with chemical systems, mechanical systems, electrical systems, and instrumentation and controls and how they are all used to design and operate an integrated plant.
  • Experience with relevant processes and unit operations, including those in cement production and both pyro-metallurgical and hydro-metallurgical processing.

Bonus points for:

  • Advanced degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related fields preferred.
  • Experience with relevant processes and unit operations used in cement production and both pyro-metallurgical and hydro-metallurgical processing.
  • Experience with demonstration plants and first-of-a-kind processes.
  • Experience scaling at a hypergrowth startup.
