Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.
CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.
Commonwealth Fusion Systems seeks a creative and seasoned internal communications leader to join our mission of enabling limitless clean energy.
As the Head of Internal Communications and Engagement, you will steer our company's internal narrative, ensuring our mission, strategy, and values are clear and resonate throughout the organization. With a pulse on what’s happening, you will keep the team informed, engaged, and inspired and ensure that employees understand the rationale behind decisions.
Collaboration is paramount, whether partnering with the CEO or working with individual contributors. You'll play a pivotal part in shaping our vibrant company culture, and contributing to our overall success.

This team member will:

  • Strategic Planning: Develop and execute an internal communications strategy aligned with business objectives to engage employees and reinforce company culture
  • Optimize Channels: Assess and enhance channels, tools, and processes for effective information sharing and gathering feedback
  • Engagement Effectiveness: Conduct and analyze employee engagement surveys, using data-driven insights to enhance communication strategies, and establish KPIs to gauge effectiveness
  • Content Development: Collaborate with stakeholders to curate compelling content for company-wide presentations. Drive alignment on key messaging for a resonant narrative
  • Communications Calendar: Partner with the People team to craft and oversee an internal communications calendar, promoting crucial content through various channels
  • Coordinated Messaging: Maintain coherence in internal messages, ensuring synchronization with external communications when necessary
  • Maximize Impact: Customize communication channels and methods to effectively reach diverse employee groups, including in-office, remote, and production teams, considering preferences and accessibility
  • Engagement Leadership: Partner with the People team to develop and promote culture initiatives, events and programs aimed at enhancing employee satisfaction and connection
  • Employer Branding: Collaboratively shape the CFS employer brand through narratives and content that authentically portrays the company’s culture and values; cultivate brand ambassadors to amplify the company’s image
  • Executive Communications: Collaborate closely with leadership to craft authentic and impactful executive communications fostering transparency and employee understanding
  • Change Communications: Create and execute communication strategies for managing changes or unexpected events

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • BA/BS degree in Communications, Marketing, Human Resources or related field
  • 10-15 years of internal communications or employee engagement experience in in a tech or science-based organization
  • Experience working with C-suite executives
  • You convey complex technical topics in clear, compelling ways to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • You have outstanding verbal and written communication skills, with a high bar for detail
  • You have intellectual curiosity and can quickly grasp complex scientific subjects
  • You enjoy delving into the technical details of fusion technology
  • You are cool and calm under pressure
  • Strong leadership abilities and experience managing high-performance teams
  • Boston-based or able to be in Boston up to 50% of your time for the first 12 months

Additional preferred experience and/or qualifications:

  • Experience working in a fast-paced, high growth company
  • Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
