Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.
CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.
The SPARC instrumentation and control team seeks an Instrumentation Design Engineer to take responsibility for the design, sourcing, implementation, testing, installation, and commissioning of instrumentation within the SPARC tokamak. This individual will work with instrumentation ranging from hot to cryogenic temperature measurement, structural measurements, electrical and magnetic instrumentation, and other measurements in extreme thermal and radiation environmental conditions, making use of electrical and optical sensing methods. This individual will own selection and sourcing of the instruments themselves – interfacing with subsystem owners to define instrumentation requirements and detailed sensor integration strategies – and be responsible for the entire instrument signal chain from sensor, through feedthroughs and cable routes, to interfaces with data acquisition and control systems.

This team member will:

  • Design of the instrumentation for multiple systems within the SPARC tokamak by production of the required design deliverables according to the SPARC design process
  • Collaborate with the lead engineers for tokamak structural, thermal, and magnetic systems and other key stakeholders to ensure all necessary functions and interfaces are included in the design and implemented according to requirements
  • Coordinate and oversee implementation, testing, installation, and commissioning of the I&C systems according to the project schedule
  • Manage suppliers of components and integrated subsystems of the I&C systems
  • Produce engineering deliverables such as instrument lists, signal lists, loop diagrams, data sheets and cabling schedules
  • Produce testing, installation, commissioning, operations, and maintenance procedures for the I&C systems
  • Ensure the design is completed in compliance with the Code of Record and established requirements
  • Maintain interfaces with other engineering subsystems
  • Report on and be accountable for progress to the head of I&C and the engineer responsible for the systems for which the I&C is being produced

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Structural, mechanical, electrical or instrumentation and control engineering, or similar knowledge or expertise
  • Direct experience specifying and installing instrumentation for complex structural, mechanical, or magnet systems from concept to completion
  • Production of engineering deliverables for design reviews, construction work packages, commissioning, operations, and maintenance
  • Understanding of the safety risks of electrical system
  • Range of different types of suitable instrumentation for measurement of key structural and electrical parameters
  • Application of engineering fundamentals to provide specific I&C solutions depending on the process needs
  • Proficiency integrating and troubleshooting analog and digital circuits

Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • Experience with instrumentation systems under a QA program such as version control
  • Complex wire and cable integration including vacuum feedthroughs
  • Instrumentation in challenging environments, including extreme temperature and radiation
  • Familiarity with COTS data acquisition and industrial control hardware
  • Familiarity in applying IEEE and IEC Standards to design solutions
  • Familiarity a with a high-level programming / scripting language e.g. Python
  • Research and development of new instrumentation or new application of existing instrumentation
  • AVEVA or similar electrical design toolset and database
  • Current best practices and emerging technologies in sensing technology
  • Best practices for electro-magnetic compatibility of sensitive instrumentation systems and cabling in environments with a high level of EM noise
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Perform activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, sitting, etc. for extended periods of time
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat, cold, strong magnets, vacuums, radiation, and noise
  • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call
  • #LI-Hybrid
