ESS is seeking an innovative, deadline-driven Process Controls Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for improving existing fluid control systems, developing new product concepts and prototypes, designing and testing mechanical and electronic systems, and developing various durability and test systems.

To be successful as a process controls engineer, you should be able to work within demanding timeframes and develop original, practical solutions to problems. Outstanding candidates draw on a wide range of engineering principles and are not afraid to wander into unchartered territory.

What you’ll do at ESS.

  • Designing, developing, and enhancing control systems in ESS iron-flow-battery product line.
  • Developing automated systems that test control functionality of battery modules during the production process.
  • Conducting research, documenting findings, and presenting reports at meetings.
  • Developing design documentation for the product control systems.
  • Identifying areas of weakness in the production line or finished products and making recommendations for improvement.
  • Developing procedures and test fixtures for the system controls on the assembly line.
  • Coordinating complex projects with a cross-functional team as well as engineering contractors.

What you bring to the table.

  • BSc in controls engineering, chemical engineering or similar.
  • 5-10 years experience in process control engineering.
  • Self-starter with a passion for engineering.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organization skills and ability to handle multiple projects at once.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to follow job required Standards and Safety Protocols, per pre-defined processes.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment with dynamic daily priorities.
  • Experience in new-product introduction and scale to manufacturing.
  • Must be proficient with industrial fluid management controls in complex piping systems.
  • Must be familiar in designing/implementing control systems for use in marine or corrosive environments.
  • Must have experience deploying and testing control systems used in industrial applications.
  • Experience with industrial control networks.

We’d love to see:

  • ANSI C/C++ Programming.
  • Experience developing products rated for marine or corrosive environments.
  • Experience with Allen Bradley, Bosch, or BRX (Do-More Designer) PLCs.
  • Experience with equipment and systems rated for Class 1 environments.
  • Experience with some of the following compliance codes: UL 9540A, UL1973, IEC 62932, NFPA 855, NFPA 68, NFPA 69, NFPA 70, NFPA 2, NFPA 13, NFPA 72, NECA 416.
