Description

The Commissioning Lead will play a key role in the commissioning of substation, surface facilities and transmission interconnections across Fervo’s portfolio of geothermal energy developments. The Commissioning Lead will oversee field execution and management of commissioning timeline, documentation, and unit handovers. Ideally, the Commissioning Lead position will have the ability to relocate to or reside at the project location in Milford, UT during commissioning efforts. This position reports to the Senior Commissioning Manager.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Lead the on-site execution of commissioning activities for geothermal production and power plant systems, ensuring safe, efficient, and timely energization and turnover.
  • Operate within Fervo’s hybrid commissioning model by managing a lean internal team, contractors, specialized vendors and O&M technicians to achieve integrated system readiness.
  • Coordinate all commissioning scopes and stakeholders including engineering, construction, ORC providers, vendors, and O&M through daily field meetings and structured progress tracking to ensure schedule alignment and system integration.
  • Enforce quality, safety, and environmental standards from pre-commissioning through handover, proactively identifying and mitigating risks to comply with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and maintain commissioning schedules, checklists, test records, and turnover packages, ensuring complete traceability and document control in line with Fervo’s documentation framework.
  • Lead functional testing, startup, and performance verification of wellfield, I&C, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Oversee system performance testing and initial reliability data collection to validate operational standards and capture lessons learned for continuous improvement.
  • Lead system troubleshooting during commissioning and early operations, coordinating with vendors and engineering to resolve issues and warranty items.
  • Represent commissioning during project readiness reviews, energization planning, and performance acceptance testing.
  • Organize and lead walkdowns and inspections to verify compliance with commissioning protocols, contract terms, and turnover requirements.
  • Manage commissioning costs, schedules, and milestones to deliver safe, efficient, and on-budget project outcomes.
  • Develop and conduct training for site personnel and contractors on commissioning and startup protocols.
  • Ensure management-of-change processes are followed to document deviations from scope and maintain configuration control through turnover.
  • Manage, coach, mentor, and advise Fervo employees on all aspects of commissioning.

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of relevant experience in power plant, energy, or other complex industrial facilities.
  • Superior understanding and track record of industrial safety best practices.
  • Superior understanding of three phase electrical power, piping, and instrumentation systems
  • Associate degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, or related) or equivalent field experience.
  • Proven success managing third-party commissioning scopes and vendor activities within hybrid teams that blend internal and external resources.
  • Deep understanding of plant systems integration and relevant standards/regulations.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage concurrent commissioning scopes.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects through multiple stages of execution.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and stakeholder coordination.
  • A cooperative and collaborative mindset with a demonstrated history of managing highly effective cross functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field.
  • Project management, commissioning or O&M certifications (e.g., PMP, CxA, CMRP or equivalent).
  • Advanced knowledge of power plant design, operations, and maintenance.
  • Advanced knowledge of asset condition monitoring technologies, including relevant certifications.
  • Expertise with electrical grid interconnection and testing requirements/standards.
  • Strong familiarity with commissioning frameworks (NETA ATS & ECS, ASHRAE) and structured document turnover systems.
  • Experience with project and contract management in EPC or owner’s engineer settings.
  • Ability to communicate conversationally in Spanish or Italian to facilitate coordination with multinational vendors and teams.

Location

This position will be based full time in Milford, UT during commissioning efforts, with relocation assistance and per diem available. Candidates should expect to maintain on-site availability, including during weekends and holidays as needed, to support commissioning activities. Relocation based on future project locations will also be required.
