We are looking for a Quantum Network Optics Engineer. As a Quantum Network Optics Engineer, you’ll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers and quantum networking products to solve the world’s most complex problems.

In this role, you will conduct quantum experiments on the EPB Quantum Network in close collaboration with quantum network developers at IonQ, the network owner, and various users of the quantum network. The research will be focused on the discovery and testing of new applications associated with entanglement distribution across a fiber optic network.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducting quantum experiments on the quantum network.
  • Conduct and assist in research of quantum network applications.
  • Enhancement of the network’s optical performance, software control, and user experience.
  • Deployment and testing of new hardware and software solutions.
  • Providing education of network owners personnel, network users, research sponsor
  • Outreach to community partners.
  • Collaboration with quantum network developers and other IonQ staff.

You’d be a good fit with:

  • Minimum years of 3 years experience.
  • Masters degree in physics, electrical engineering or related field.
  • Past experience with optical fibers, optical networks, and deployment of networking equipment.
  • Light programming experience primarily for data acquisition.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience working directly with customers.

You’d be a great fit with:

  • 5+ years working in industry or national labs.
  • PhD in Physics or Electrical Engineering with a specialization in AMO physics or quantum information.
  • Experience in quantum networking.
  • Familiarity with quantum frequency conversion, quantum repeaters, and photonic switches.


Location: Chattanooga, TN
Travel: Occasional travel to other IonQ office locations

The approximate base salary range for this position is $107,123 - $140,251.

Compensation will vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Posted base salary figures are subject to change as new market data becomes available. Beyond base salary, total compensation includes a variable bonus and equity component and a range of benefit options found on our career site at ionq.co/jobs. IonQ's HQ is located in College Park, Maryland, a quick 15-minute metro from Washington DC. We are actively building out our recently opened manufacturing and production facility in Bothell, WA (near Seattle). Depending on the position, you may be required to be near one of our offices in College Park, Seattle, or Toronto.
