Reporting to the Chief Mining Engineer

Job Responsibilities and Duties:

Lead Geotechnical Engineer

  1. Develop and maintain the geotechnical team’s capability to deliver a high level of support to the project.
  2. Geotechnical and Structural Logging:
    • Perform detailed geotechnical logging, including Rock Quality Designation (RQD), Q-system, and other relevant methods, on-site.
    • Ensure accurate and efficient data collection in accordance with industry standards and project requirements.
    • Able to use and supervise use of geotechnical equipment like Point loading testing etc.
  3. Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC):
    • Conduct QA/QC checks on already logged core to ensure data integrity and accuracy.
    • Identify discrepancies or anomalies in the data and take corrective actions as necessary.
  4. Logging Procedures and Standards Review:
    • Lead the review and continuous improvement of logging procedures and standards.
    • Ensure that all geotechnical data collection activities are in line with best practices and project-specific requirements.
  5. Data Analysis and Reporting:
    • Analyze geotechnical and geophysical data to identify patterns, trends, and insights.
    • Prepare detailed reports and presentations on the findings for internal and external stakeholders.
  6. Data Modeling Collaboration:
    • Work closely with Data Science and Geology teams to model geotechnical, geophysical, and structural data.
    • Provide geotechnical expertise to support the development of accurate and reliable models.
  7. Lead collaboration between mine engineering, geotechnical and operational team across sites and regions ensuring the sharing of successful innovation and practice initiatives.

Qualifications and skills:

  • Masters level qualification in Geotechnical / Mining Engineering or similar
  • Extensive experience in underground mining (>10 years)
  • Extensive knowledge of a range of mining methods in underground mining
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing technical standards and guidelines.
  • Familiarity with geological concepts including stratigraphy and hydrogeology
  • Familiarity with computer software such as Leapfrog, qgis, MX-Deposit etc.
  • Member of the Engineering Institute of Zambia or any other relevant engineering body internationally
  • High level of proficiency in writing technical reports
  • An ability to link technical outcomes to financial results.
