About the job:

We are seeking an experienced Mine Surveyor to lead surveying operations and ensure the accuracy of our mine’s mapping and measurement processes. This statutory position (Mining Regulation 211(a)) is essential to shaft sinking, terrace build, pegging, and alignment activities. The ideal candidate will combine technical surveying expertise with strong organizational and communication skills, ensuring compliance with Zambian regulations while supporting safe and efficient mine development.

Job Responsibilities and Duties:

Surveying & Statutory Duties

  • Conduct mine surveys to determine the size, shape, and location of underground workings.
  • Provide accurate shaft sinking and construction surveys to support safe underground development.
  • Develop and maintain statutory mine plans, including maps of caving areas, surface infrastructure, and boundaries within the mining licence area.
  • Integrate surveying data with KoBold’s data systems
  • Calculate volumes and tonnages for accurate reporting and inventory management.
  • Ensure alignment of shafts, tunnels, and surface facilities through precise survey control.
  • Maintain and calibrate survey instruments and implement survey software for efficiency.
  • Prepare statutory reports, plans, and submissions in line with MSD requirements.
  • Maintain up-to-date survey records for internal and statutory inspections

Operational Support:

  • Collaborate with mine operations and engineering teams to ensure survey data supports planning, construction, and production goals.
  • Identify areas for improvement and contribute to decision-making with accurate spatial data.
  • Supervise and mentor junior surveyors and survey assistants.
  • Attend daily project meeting and proactively identify priorities .

Compliance & Safety:

  • Ensure all survey activities comply with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, 2010, MSD regulations, and site HSE standards.
  • Participate in risk assessments and safety reviews relating to underground development and shaft sinking.
  • Liaise with the Mines Safety Department and other authorities during inspections and audits.

Best Fit:

  • Proven expertise in shaft sinking and underground construction survey work, with a strong track record of statutory compliance under MR 211(a).
  • A high level of accuracy and attention to detail, with the ability to anticipate survey needs and proactively solve problems before they impact operations.
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills, capable of managing multiple survey projects while ensuring deadlines and compliance requirements are met.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to liaise confidently with engineers, mining teams, contractors, and regulatory authorities.
  • A commitment to safety and regulatory compliance, ensuring all survey activities meet MSD and Occupational Health & Safety Act standards.
  • High integrity, discretion, and professionalism in fulfilling statutory responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • Recognised Degree or Diploma in Mine Surveying / Geomatics or equivalent experience
  • Valid Mine Surveyor’s Certificate of Competency (MR 211(a)) issued by the Mines Safety Department.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in underground mine surveying, including shaft sinking and construction.
  • Experience with multinational or large-scale mining operations preferred
  • Proficiency in survey software (Surpac, AutoCAD, or equivalent) and modern instruments (Total Stations, GPS, Gyrotheodolites, Laser Scanners).
  • Registration with the Surveyors Institute of Zambia (SIZ) or equivalent professional body (advantageous).
  • Basic programming in Python or another language is a plus, but not required
