Mangrove Lithium, a Canadian cleantech company located in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, is focused on the commercial development of novel electrochemical technology capable of refining lithium from a wide variety of sources. Our breakthrough Lithium refining technology seeks to unlock a battery powered, clean energy future. The company recently attracted funding through Breakthrough Energy, BMW iVentures, and BDC Capital and is working towards the deployment of a first-of-its-kind commercial plant.

Position

Mangrove is seeking an exceptional individual to play a key role in our multidisciplinary engineering team reporting to the Lead Mechanical Engineer. The Mechanical Engineer will work with engineering and management to support the mechanical development and installation of chemical process plant designs. A key responsibility of the role will include assisting with the build-out of our first-of-its-kind commercial plant.

The broad scope of this role encompasses the design and layout of various aspects of new chemical process plant infrastructure. You will prepare conceptual and implement plant designs based on input from the process, electrical, and management teams, act as the owner’s engineer when reviewing documentation from our EPC, participate in brainstorming and review meetings, and liaise with EPCs to further refine plant characteristics.

This is a hybrid role which will require on-site presence of at least 3 days per week at our Delta, BC facility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with EPCs, partners, and internal team to develop and implement plant mechanical design for our first commercial plant.
  • Assist in guiding, reviewing, and managing building improvements required prior to plant construction.
  • Identify and evaluate mechanical elements of industrial plant designs with good judgement according to sound design practices.
  • Solve/review complex problems where analysis/optimization of a situation and data evaluation are required to meet specifications.
  • Liaise with EPC and the operations/client team to support/troubleshoot projects from conception through to commissioning.
  • Prepare specifications required for third party fabrication, liaise with vendors and contractors to ensure successful and timely completion of work.
  • Maintain project records and provide comprehensive project updates.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.

Qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 5+ years of industrial experience and strong interest to work in R&D and product development environment.
  • Previous experience working with and managing EPC companies.
  • Previous experience with piping, pumps, solids handling, and rotating equipment.
  • Experience with drafting and modifying 2D AutoCAD files
  • Familiarity with use of 3D plant modelling software.
  • Familiarity with industrial instrumentation is desired.
  • Be a registered professional with Engineers and Geoscientists BC or have the ability to readily become one.
  • Demonstrated project management capability.
  • Basic understanding of electrochemistry would be an asset.

  • Excellent critical thinking, analysis, and creative problem-solving.
  • Ability to interact with a wide range of scientists and engineers.
