Who we are

We are Mantle 8, a clean-tech start-up revolutionizing natural hydrogen exploration with cutting-edge technology and geologic strategies. Backed by leading clean-tech investors including Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Kiko Ventures, we're scaling up affordable natural hydrogen exploration — and you could be a key part of this journey!

Natural hydrogen offers an affordable, abundant energy source with significant potential in Europe. At Mantle 8, we leverage 20+ years of expertise in geology, predictive modelling, and 4D imaging to pinpoint optimal reserves.

What the role is about

As a Junior Data Scientist/Data Engineer, you will join Mantle8's data team and work with experts from multiple teams to help deliver our next-generation exploration platform. This is a hands-on development role where you'll build the data processing backbone that powers our hydrogen exploration tech.

You'll develop Python-based tools and workflows to process complex geospatial datasets, implement machine learning algorithms for exploration targeting, and create automated data pipelines that integrate geological, geophysical, and environmental data.

This role offers exceptional learning opportunities in both clean-tech innovation and advanced geoscience data analysis, with direct mentorship from senior scientists and engineers.

What you'll be doing

Core Development:

  • Develop Python applications and data processing pipelines for geoscientific analysis
  • Build automated workflows for large geospatial dataset processing and integration
  • Implement machine learning algorithms for exploration zone identification
  • Create data visualization tools and dashboards for geological interpretation
  • Develop API connections between external software platforms and internal datasets

Data Engineering:

  • Design and maintain ETL pipelines for diverse geoscientific data sources
  • Ensure data quality, preprocessing, and integration across multiple data types
  • Build scalable data infrastructure supporting real-time processing workflows
  • Manage and optimize database systems for large geological datasets

Research & Innovation:

  • Test and validate new analytical methodologies with academic and industry partners
  • Contribute to algorithm development for hydrogen geosystem identification
  • Support intellectual property development through innovative technical solutions

What we're looking for

Essential Requirements:

  • Recent graduate (Master's or PhD) in Data Science, Computer Science, Geoscience, or related field
  • Strong Python development skills — this is critical for success in the role
  • Experience with data analysis libraries (pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, matplotlib)
  • Experience with web development frameworks (Flask, Django) or similar development tools
  • AWS or cloud data environment experience (AWS, GCP, Azure)
  • Basic understanding of machine learning concepts and neural networks
  • SQL knowledge and experience with databases
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and eagerness to learn

Highly Valued:

  • Experience with geospatial analysis tools (QGIS, ArcGIS) or libraries (GeoPandas, Rasterio)
  • Knowledge of big data tools (Spark, Hadoop) or cloud platforms (AWS, GCP)
  • Familiarity with version control (Git) and software development best practices
  • Understanding of geological or geophysical data types
  • Previous internship or project experience in energy, mining, or geosciences

Personal Qualities:

  • Creative mindset with strong analytical thinking
  • Excellent communication skills for multidisciplinary collaboration
  • Adaptable and thriving in a dynamic start-up environment
  • Passionate about contributing to clean-tech innovations
  • Willing to relocate to the Grenoble area, French Alps

What we offer

Competitive Package:

  • Attractive salary with meal & vacation vouchers
  • Corporate welfare plan and supplementary health insurance
  • Indefinite contract with full French employment protections

Unique Opportunity:

  • Direct contribution to groundbreaking hydrogen exploration technology
  • Hands-on experience building next-generation exploration platforms
  • Mentorship from world-class geoscientists and senior developers
  • Professional growth in a top EU clean-tech start-up
  • Collaborative work environment in the stunning French Alps

Career Development:

  • Clear pathway to senior data scientist/engineer roles
  • Opportunity to become a technical expert in natural hydrogen exploration
  • Conference participation and industry networking opportunities
  • Potential for academic collaborations and publications
