About us & the role

We are Mantle 8, a pioneering start-up dedicated to exploring natural hydrogen through advanced technology and geology. We are seeking a Structural Geologist to strengthen our Geology Team and help us unlock the full potential of our innovative technologies for the energy transition. In this role, you will expand our field mapping and subsurface interpretation capabilities, enabling us to identify, model, and de-risk the generation–migration–trapping elements of hydrogen systems.

Natural Hydrogen could offer an affordable and clean energy source to power the energy transition. Significant resources are being discovered, including in Europe and more specifically France. However, understanding exactly where to tap into these natural resources is key to optimizing their economic viability.

At Mantle 8, we have developed a unique set of technologies to image the entire Hydrogen producing system under our feet. Our work is grounded in over 15 years of research in geology, predictive modelling, and 4D imaging techniques.

One year ago, we have onboarded 2 of the most prestigious clean-tech investors worldwide - incl. Kiko and Breakthrough Energy Ventures, to help us deliver affordable natural hydrogen at scale.

Now, you have the opportunity to be a key part of this journey!

What you'll do

  • Conduct fieldwork to perform outcrop mapping, collect accurate lithological and structural measurements, and sample rocks to feed the internal database tailored for exploring natural hydrogen.
  • Carry out literature reviews and geological synthesis, prepare maps and geological cross-sections, and run diagnostic evaluations of favorable zones for natural hydrogen systems from source to sink.
  • Perform subsurface interpretation of wells and seismic datasets across diverse geological settings, including sedimentary and especially foreland basins, fold and thrust belts, and cratonic environments.
  • Integrate and analyze multiscale datasets — geological, geophysical, and geochemical data, wells, seismics and punctual measurements — to build geomatics (GIS) projects sourcing 3D sub-subsurface models to make data-driven risking of natural hydrogen systems, prospect evaluation supporting exploration decision up to drilling.
  • Foster integration between geosciences disciplines to improve understanding and resolution of subsurface exploration challenges.
  • Communicate effectively with collaborators at all levels, providing regular updates on project progress, challenges, and solutions.
  • Collaborate closely with the science and technical teams and report directly to the Geology Lead.

What we're looking for

Education:

  • MSc or PhD degree with majors in Geology, Structural geology, Geodynamics, Basin Geology, Sedimentology, Geoscience.
  • Preferred: Advanced degree (MSc/PhD) in Geology/Geoscience with a structural geology background

Experience:

  • 1-3 years of experience in Academia, Mining or Oil & Gas industry.
  • Strong proficiency in field-based studies and data integration.
  • Demonstrated experience in tectonic processes, structural geology, mineralogy and petrology, subsurface data analysis and interpretation, 3D modelling.

Skills:

  • Proven ability to foster a positive and productive working environment with technical teams and external partners.
  • Strong understanding of diverse tectonic settings, structural geology, and basin evolution, particularly in orogenic/ophiolitic settings.
  • Ability to construct robust 3D geological models using historical datasets (synthesis, define a field data collection strategy, process newly acquired field and subsurface data).
  • Proficiency with geomatics and geological software tools, including FieldMove, ArcGIS Pro or QGIS, Stereonet/Orient, and 3D geo-modeling packages (e.g., Leapfrog Geo, Move, GOCAD/Skua, Petrel).
  • Preferred skills in petrology and field geology.
  • Valid driver’s license, ability to travel and work safely in remote terrain.
  • Professional proficiency in English (written & spoken), French (optional).
  • Commitment to maintaining high standards of quality, data integrity and confidentiality.

Availability:

  • Able to start in January 2026 (or earlier by mutual agreement).

What we offer

  • Competitive salary
  • Indefinite contract (CDI) with worker protection as provisioned by French labor laws
  • Corporate welfare plan
  • Supplementary health insurance
  • Vacation bonus (Collective agreement)
  • Company advantages including meal & vacation vouchers

A final word

This is an ideal role for an innovative and ambitious Structural Geologist who wishes to actively contribute to cutting edge exploration of geo-resources and successful development projects. As the successful candidate, you will work with integrated project teams composed of geologists, geophysicists, geochemist, reservoir engineers and data scientists to perform various surface and subsurface studies as well as 3D geological models. Your strong technical skills will be essential to conducting detailed multidisciplinary studies such as field work, GIS mapping, seismic interpretation and 3D geological models adapted for hydrogen exploration.

You will report directly to the Geology Lead and will be based at our main office in Grenoble, France in the heart of the French Alps. Furthermore, we guarantee you:

  • Unique exposure to top-tier individuals in the field.
  • Great networking opportunities.
  • Strong career growth potential.
  • A chance to be part of one of Europe’s most exciting clean-tech start-ups.

Come join us and play a key role in our journey to revolutionizing the energy transition!
