Geo-Environmental & Permitting Apprentice
Toulouse, France
Descriptif du poste
Who we are
Mantle8 is a clean-tech start-up revolutionizing natural hydrogen exploration through cutting-edge technology and innovative geologic strategies. Backed by leading clean-tech investors (Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Kiko Ventures), we're scaling up affordable, abundant natural hydrogen exploration — a high-potential energy source for Europe.
The role
As a Geo-Environmental & Permitting Apprentice, you'll support the development of Hydrogeco, Mantle8's flagship project and one of Europe's most advanced natural hydrogen initiatives. Working directly with the Project Director, you'll contribute to the environmental, regulatory and HSE preparation of exploration activities: drilling permit applications, exploration permits (PER), environmental studies and the deployment of a pilot site.
You'll collaborate with geoscientists, drilling engineers, environmental consultants and public authorities across the full lifecycle of a pioneering subsurface energy project.
What you'll be doing
- Permitting & regulatory affairs: prepare drilling permit applications and environmental authorizations (French Mining Code, Environmental Code), manage PER and regulatory monitoring.
- Environmental studies & risk assessment: coordinate baseline studies and consultants (EIA, biodiversity, hydrogeology, noise…), review impact and risk assessments.
- Subsurface environmental management: aquifer protection, induced seismicity, water/soil/gas monitoring, carbon footprint and LCA.
- Industrial safety & drilling support: HSE preparation, well integrity, safety studies (HAZID/HAZOP), hydrogen hazards, ATEX, emergency response planning.
- ESG & project management: ESG reporting, carbon accounting, investor materials, deliverable tracking and permitting trackers.
What we offer
- Work on one of Europe's most advanced natural hydrogen exploration projects
- Full exposure to the development cycle, from permitting to drilling
- Mentorship from multidisciplinary experts (geology, drilling, environment, HSE, project management)
- Rare expertise at the intersection of geosciences, environmental engineering and clean energy
Work environment
Based in Toulouse (12 rue Michel Labrousse, 31100), with frequent field visits across southwest France and close collaboration with the Toulouse and Grenoble teams. A dynamic, international start-up backed by world-leading climate investors.
Profil recherché
Final-year Master's or Engineering School student (apprenticeship) in one of the following disciplines: Environmental Engineering, Geosciences, Hydrogeology, Environmental Sciences, Geological Engineering, HSE / Industrial Risk, or Energy & Environmental Systems.
- Strong interest in subsurface energy projects
- Basic knowledge of environmental regulations and impact assessment
- Excellent analytical and organizational skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Fluent French and good English
Highly valued: French environmental and mining regulations, mining / energy law, geothermal energy, oil & gas, carbon footprint / LCA, GIS (QGIS or ArcGIS), well integrity, hydrogen technologies.

Our multidisciplinary team brings together geoscientists, engineers, data scientists and explorers who share a common ambition: advancing scientific understanding while building the foundations of a new energy frontier.
From regional exploration concepts to prospect generation and technological development, Mantle8 works at the intersection of research, innovation and industrial application to accelerate the emergence of natural hydrogen as part of the global energy transition.
At Mantle8, exploration is not only about discovering new resources — it is about expanding knowledge, challenging assumptions and building solutions for the future of energy.
Why is everything in English if Mantle8 is based in the heart of the French Alps?
Because Mantle8 is an international adventure.
As of March 2026, our team includes 21 people representing 9 different nationalities. This diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and English is the language that allows everyone to collaborate, debate ideas and build things together.
We love our home in the French Alps, but inside Mantle8 our common ground is English — from meetings and technical discussions to emails and, yes, even our jokes.
So if you’re thinking about joining us, English is not just helpful — it’s essential to be part of the conversation.
