Job Summary

The Electrochemistry Development Scientist will lead advanced electrochemistry research and development efforts supporting the company’s battery cell roadmap. This role focuses on designing rigorous electrochemical research and building the data and analysis infrastructure that turns processing, testing, and other relevant data into valuable insights and decisions. The engineer will work cross-functionally with manufacturing, process engineering, quality, supply chain, and engineering teams to translate electrochemical insights into robust production-ready products and technologies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform advanced electrochemistry research related to electrode materials, electrolytes, separators, and cell architectures.
  • Develop deep understanding of electrochemical mechanisms affecting performance, safety, and lifetime of lithium-ion battery cells.
  • Develop and support relationships with suppliers, academic partners, and industry players to track state-of-the-art technologies and identify opportunities for collaboration.
  • Design and execute R&D for the electrochemistry roadmap, including DOEs, materials evaluation, root cause investigation, and degradation mechanism analysis, by fully leveraging existing tools and developing new tools.
  • Apply data engineering and analysis approaches to organize, connect, and fully utilize databases including experiment parameters, test results, processing metrics, quality data, teardown data, and supplier information.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, process engineering, pack, and business development teams to transfer electrochemistry developments to manufacturing processes, and incorporate other teams’ goals and limitations into electrochemistry development projects.
  • Support evaluation, specification, and commissioning of new equipment used for electrochemical testing and materials characterization.
  • Provide electrochemistry expertise during pilot line and production trials to ensure stable, high-yield cell manufacturing.
  • Lead and support root cause investigations for cell quality, yield, and capacity bottlenecks using electrochemical diagnostics.
  • Analyze experimental and production data to identify performance trends and recommend process or design improvements.
  • Communicate technical findings clearly across engineering, operations, and leadership teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Biochemistry, or related field.
  • Strong knowledge of lithium-ion battery chemistry, electrochemical analysis techniques, and degradation mechanisms.
  • Experience and ability to design, program, and analyze results from electrochemistry testing methods such as pulse power characterization, cycling, EIS, cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic cycling, and rate capability.
  • Experience working in battery cell R&D, pilot manufacturing, or cell production environments.
  • Knowledge of cell design, construction, fabrication, and fixturing.
  • Experience translating cell performance targets into cell design and research targets and ideas.
  • Ability to interpret complex electrochemical data and translate insights into actionable engineering decisions.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills across manufacturing, engineering, and supplier organizations.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
