Senior Mechanical Engineer, Electrochemical Cell Design
Redwood Materials is looking for a mechanical engineer with extensive experience in custom machine design and automated equipment to develop advanced solutions for a wide range of applications from industrial bulk solids/materials handling to more intricate manufacturing processes requiring a high degree of precision and control.
Responsibilities will include:
- Design, build, and commission electrochemical cells at the lab, pilot and production scale.
- Improve existing equipment with targeted upgrades, including automation.
- Create concepts/layouts and work with stakeholders to define architecture.
- Develop detailed specifications to define machine and process requirements.
- Create detailed mechanical designs and select hardware/components.
- Good understanding of materials, material compatibility, and design for lifetime.
- Perform engineering calculations and FEA to validate equipment and tool designs.
- Create models, detailed drawings, and bills of materials.
- Develop control narrative and collaborate with controls engineering to execute.
- Conduct machine acceptance testing to validate conformance with specification.
- Develop operating and maintenance manuals and conduct training.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience in machine design for diverse applications.
- Experience designing for 24/7 industrial use, with safety and reliability at forefront.
- Experience designing electrochemical cells.
- Structural design (skids, equipment supports, mezzanines).
- Tank design (pressure vessel and/or reactor/containment/agitated).
- Piping design.
- Highly proficient with Solid Modeling 3D CAD, SolidWorks preferred.
- Skilled in creating detailed drawings, with strong knowledge of GD&T.
- Well versed in all types of machine/automation components, sensors, vision systems, electro-mechanical actuators, motion control, pneumatics, hydraulics, etc.
- FEA and CFD experience.
- Working knowledge of machine shop fabrication processes and machine building.
- Measurement system analysis experience.

The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
