The ideal candidate will be responsible for leading interdisciplinary teams in designing, prototyping, and testing complex electromechanical systems for our stellarator fusion device, including high temperature superconducting magnets.
This role requires a deep understanding of both electrical and mechanical engineering principles, along with hands-on experience in building functional prototypes. The successful candidate will play a critical role in driving innovation and bringing cutting-edge fusion technologies from concept to reality.

Reporting to: Director of Electrical Engineering and Program Director
Your role in the mission:
- Lead the design and development of electromechanical systems from concept to prototype, incorporating both electrical and mechanical components.
- Conduct feasibility studies and risk assessments to ensure designs meet performance, reliability, and safety requirements
- Oversee the fabrication and assembly of prototypes, coordinating with internal teams to ensure timely and cost-effective production.
- Hands-on assembly and testing of prototypes, troubleshooting any issues that arise during the build process.
- Iterate and refine prototypes based on test results, feedback, and design improvements.
- Develop and implement test plans to validate the performance and functionality of prototypes, utilizing a variety of testing methods and equipment.
- Analyze test data and troubleshoot any issues to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Work closely with quality assurance teams to ensure prototypes meet regulatory standards and customer specifications.
What you’ll need:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
- Proven experience in both electrical and mechanical engineering roles, with a focus on prototype development.
- Prior experience in project management or team leadership roles
- Familiarity in CAD software (e.g., Siemens NX or SolidWorks) for 3D modeling is desirable.
- Strong hands-on skills in building and testing electromechanical prototypes.
- Proficiency with tools and equipment.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail, with a track record of delivering high-quality solutions under tight deadlines.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Experience with HTS Magnet development is desirable
- Vacuum and cryogenic experience is desirable.
- Experience of building magnets, motors and/or generators is desirable.
