WHY VEIR?
Giving everyone in the world access to clean, reliable, affordable energy will require substantial expansion of global electricity transmission networks. VEIR is developing a new generation of High Temperature Superconductor (HTS)-based transmission lines, enabling long distance, reliable, low loss, cost–effective power transfer in far smaller right–of–ways. VEIR’s innovations overcome the main barriers to transmission expansion, enabling the world to access the very lowest cost renewable power.
THE ROLE:
As the VP of Engineering at VEIR, you will play a pivotal leadership role in driving the company's engineering initiatives and ensuring the successful development and deployment of its HTS-based transmission lines. Reporting directly to the CEO, you will be responsible for overseeing and managing the LN (Liquid Nitrogen) Infrastructure, Heat Transfer, and Superconducting Systems departments.

You Are

  • A proven leader: You are a dynamic motivator and technical leader with a proven track record of solid leadership and management experience, capable of overseeing and motivating a substantial technical team to achieve multiple objectives and goals effectively.
  • A strong communicator: You keep others informed as we work, to enable collaboration and prioritization. You are skilled at communicating with the team, whether it be digital or verbal.
  • A capable collaborator: You understand that we can accomplish more as a team than as an individual. Working by yourself is essential, and the ability to help the group achieve its objectives is key.
  • Safety-focused: You exemplify the best in our industry in visible safety leadership.
  • Improving the process. You question the standard dogma of our industry and believe that with some exploration, we may find better ways of doing things.
  • Curious by nature: You want to understand why things work and how certain decisions were made.
  • Hands-on by nature: You love to work with your hands doing projects–people often call you a tinkerer. Whether there is dirt literally under your fingernails or figuratively, you love to tackle projects.

You Will

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive engineering strategy aligned with VEIR's overall business objectives, ensuring efficient utilization of resources and effective collaboration between different engineering teams.
  • Provide strong technical leadership and guidance to the LN Infrastructure, Heat Transfer, and Superconducting Systems departments, fostering a culture of innovation, excellence, and continuous improvement.
  • Recruit, mentor, and manage a high-performing engineering team, promoting a collaborative and inclusive work environment. Set clear goals and expectations, provide regular feedback and performance evaluations, and support the professional growth of team members.
  • Oversee the planning, execution, and timely delivery of engineering projects, ensuring adherence to quality standards, cost-effectiveness, and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate closely with other functional departments, including Research and Development, Manufacturing, and Business Development, to drive cross-functional alignment and ensure seamless integration of engineering efforts.
  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in HTS technology and related fields, evaluate their potential application in VEIR's products, and drive the development of new technologies and methodologies to enhance product performance and competitiveness.
  • Identify and mitigate engineering risks and challenges, proactively addressing any issues that may impact project timelines, quality, or cost.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field is required.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in engineering roles, and at least 5 years of experience in a senior leadership position overseeing complex engineering projects and teams.
  • Strong technical knowledge and understanding of high-temperature superconductors, power transmission systems, heat transfer, cryogenics, process equipment, or related engineering disciplines.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading and managing multidisciplinary engineering teams, driving high-performance cultures, delivering results in a fast-paced, dynamic environment demonstrated by the ability to develop and execute engineering strategies that align with business objectives and drive innovation, efficiency, and market competitiveness.
  • Proficiency in project management methodologies and tools, with a strong ability to plan, execute, and monitor engineering projects, ensuring on-time delivery and compliance with quality standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to both technical, non-technical, executive and board member stakeholders.
  • Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills to foster cross-functional teamwork and alignment.
  • Passion for working in a startup environment with a high level of comfort navigating ambiguity, adapting to change, and taking calculated risks.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed to support engineering projects and business development efforts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the power transmission industry or related fields is highly desirable.
  • A Master's degree or Ph.D. in a relevant discipline is preferred.
  • Familiarity with relevant industry regulations, standards, and compliance requirements related to power transmission systems and infrastructure.
  • Don’t worry if you don’t check 100% of these boxes... We want to meet sharp, talented individuals like you!
